Close Collaboration Between SPDX and openEuler Enables the Standard Stay More Relevant

SPDX Ambassador Gopi Krishnan shares his views on the importance of openEuler translating SPDX 3.0 in Chinese language.

As It's FOSS was closely following the recently concluded openEuler Summit, we are bringing a few conversations that shed lights on the openEuler and its contribution to open source.

This is the first of the four interviews that has been prepared together with openEuler's support.

Gopi Krishnan Rajbahadur is SPDX Ambassador. SPDX is an organization under Linux Foundation and it works on creating open standard capable of representing systems with software components in as SBOMs (Software Bill of Materials) and other AI, data and security references supporting a range of risk management use cases.

Q: What are your first impression of the openEuler Summit 2024?

From the get-go, I could see a mobius strip screen trying to display what openEuler has been doing. I took a walk around and I saw there was a lot of international booths and it seems like Global Community has started adopting openEuler more and more. I could see a lot of products using openEuler and they were demoing it which was really nice to see.

Compared to last time there was a lot more English this time around so it was very easy for me to get around and it's nice to see that openEuler is becoming even more inclusive.

The screen, the main stage is a thing of beauty I still can't get over how grand everything is and how nice the talks are organized and everything's been put together so far and the Keynotes have been very informative. This time they (openEuler) have outdone themselves.

Q: What are your views on SPDX 3.0 Chinese version?

openEuler translating SPDX 3.0 into Chinese is a fantastic initiative particularly because China has a lot of developers and a lot of modern day software comes out of China.

SPDX 3.0 being capable of representing AI and data set components and with the recent push with a lot of AI software development and China being a Powerhouse in AI software development, having a Chinese version of the spdx 3.0 helps software that is being originated here to write the bill of materials, particularly AI bill of materials, so that supply chain security can be ensured. The openEuler providing this translation and adopting SPDX 3.0 as part of their ecosystem helps foster trust reliability and supply chain security which is always nice.

Standards are very important as we all know and having the standards translated into a local language is very important for its adoption but unfortunately it's a very hard and time consuming work so kudos to openEuler for putting their hand up and doing this.

Q: Significance of collaboration between openEuler and SPDX

openEuler is one of the largest operating systems that is currently existing. Maybe not the largest but one of the largest certainly. And it has a user base of more than 30 million, so the requirements that come from such a huge project is very important to enhance billup material standard like SPDX.

The close collaboration between SPDXand openEuler enables the standard stay more relevant and get user requirements in real time. Increased collaboration means the standard can co-evolve in such a way that it can support a multitude of systems. openEuler being an active contributor in translating the standards particularly SPDX 3.0 they translated it in record time. The increased collaboration means maybe the standards can be translated as and when they are developed so that parallel versions can be released together.

So all in all this is a fantastic news and I look forward to working with openEuler more and increased collaboration between SPDX and openEuler.

Q: Further plans on collaborating with openEuler

I would absolutely love to continue the collaboration. Like every year it seems like openEuler is getting better and better and more welcoming to the global community. Year on year, it seems like openEuler is putting on a bigger and better show so I would absolutely love to be a part of it and learn more from the community and take the finding back and try to enhance the SPDX standards and my other research projects.
