openEuler is not just an OS, it's a platform to create Different OS

CNCF China Director, Keith Chan, shares his views on openEuler's growth in the field of Cloud Native.

As It's FOSS was closely following the recently concluded openEuler Summit, we are bringing a few conversations that shed lights on the openEuler and its contribution to open source.

This is the third of the four interviews that has been prepared together with openEuler's support. 4th interview is in video format only.

Keith Chan is the Director of Strategic Planning, Linux Foundation APAC, CNCF China Director and Hyperledger China Director. He shares his views at the recently concluded openEuler summit 2024.

Q: What's the unique value of openEuler in Cloud Native?

First of all, congratulate to openEuler that the ecosystem is getting bigger and bigger. We have been talking about Cloud Native. it is everywhere uh almost like 3 years already. The combination between CNCF, Kubernetes and openEuler actually will expand more into different areas because the native support of openEuler on Kubernetes. Also, it integrates with a lot of different scenarios like AI, Edge, Cloud, IoT as well. They expand whole ecosystem to the Cloud Native developers so when you imagine that for example in AI, if I'm a Cloud Native developer, I'm actually deploying PyTorch to different scenarios. The native support of PyTorch makes me really happy. Otherwise, if I customize PyTorch or Tensorflow, you know, infrastructure that I need to do it by myself. so using openEuler and also kubernetes together it will be a much better much easier for me.

Q. openEuler has integrated with CNCF's CI/CD to offer native verification, with two projects already onboarded. Are there any further plans for this collaboration?

It is actually really exciting because when we talk to openEuler's CI/CD and CNCF projects is really good. It is outstanding news to those Cloud Native developers because it will provide a lot of different OS options to them. Also, the need to support openEuoler on different architecture, makes it more easier for the Cloud Native developers to use different computing resources as well. So this is really important for the Cloud Native developers. It expands the whole options because right now it's (openEuler) available from the different cloud providers so it's actually very easy for you to download those (architecture) version. I think it's really exciting and we are really happy to see that happening.

Q. Compared to last year, openEuler has released two versions this year, 24.03 and 24.09. What do you see as the biggest advancement and innovations in openEuler this year?

There is a lot of good development in the latest version. Like performance, scalability improving but the most important thing will be AI Native OS. This is something that the market is looking for, the developer is looking for. So as I just mentioned above in an example that if I want to deploy PyTorch because right now more than 80% LLM using PyTortch, in that case openEuler supporting PyTorch natively makes much more easier. So the 8 AI native OS which is really exciting and I think it will helps a lot of companies even in different industry and make it more easier for them to deploy AI.

Q. What is your view on openEuler's global development prospects? What are its core competitive strengths and value in its globalization journey?

We've been collaborating a lot of different scenario. Like openEuler actually have a keynote in Open Source Summit Europe recently and talked about AI Cloud Native OS. I think we should expand more collaboration and then talk about how to enable Cloud Native developers and developers around the world to understand what is openEuler. Because openEuler is not just a OS, it's actually an OS platform to create different OS. So I just mentioned that you can create OS for like Cloud, AI, Edge, IoT etc. I think openEuler is ready for the global developers to collaborate, to have more contributors around the world. We really anticipate to have more collaboration with open Euler. So openEuler is a new OS option to the world. Really happy to see openEuler's 5 years anniversary. Congratulations!
