NVIDIA has open sourced its proprietary AI-powered decision optimization engine.
Other than making hardware that makes high-performance computing accessible, NVIDIA is also known for their vast catalog of open source projects that include tools and libraries like CUDA, cuDNN, RAPIDS, TensorRT, and many others.
While their GPU pricing can cause psychological distress, their open source endeavors have been a crucial part of how artificial intelligence and machine learning have grown in the past few years.
And now, NVIDIA has announced that they are open sourcing one of their existing proprietary AI-powered tools, allowing anyone to use and develop solutions based on it.
What's Happening: In collaboration with the COIN-OR Foundation, NVIDIA has set out to open source cuOpt, their AI-powered decision optimization engine that's used by many organizations around the globe, particularly those involved in logistics and supply chain management.
When in use, cuOpt helps organizations optimize delivery routes, reduce fuel consumption on delivery vehicles, improve the overall efficiency, and minimize operational expenses that often go up when not kept in check.
What to Expect: The whole set of capabilities that cuOpt has to offer, that include things like processing billions of variables, managing large-scale decision-making, optimizing delivery routes, handling complex logistics problems, and more.
Some real-life use cases include power grid management for minimizing blackout risks, bed allocation in hospitals for efficiently assigning beds to patients, and optimizing last-mile delivery routes for logistics companies to reduce delivery time and fuel consumption.
Even developers can take advantage of cuOpt, NVIDIA says that:
For developers, it provides a high-performance AI toolkit that can solve decision problems up to 3,000x faster than CPU solvers in complex optimization challenges such as network data routing — optimizing the flow of video, voice, and web traffic to reduce congestion and improve efficiency.
Many organizations like IBM, COPT, HiGHS, and a few others are said to have started work on evaluating and integrating cuOpt into their operations. At present, the source code for cuOpt hasn't shown up, but it is set to go live on the COIN-OR Foundation's GitHub page.
Those looking to have an early look or want to deploy it in their organization can visit the product page for cuOpt to learn more.
