Bianca Lewis becomes executive director of the OpenSearch Foundation.
The Linux Foundation recently welcomed Microsoft’s DocumentDB into its portfolio of open source projects, marking a shift toward vendor-neutral governance and broader community participation. It was a move that aimed to foster collaboration, transparency, and long-term sustainability for the project.
Within the same ecosystem, one of its hosted projects, the OpenSearch Software Foundation, has now undergone a leadership change.
Bianca Lewis will lead the foundation as the Executive Director, overseeing community engagement, member support, and strategic planning. She has previously held executive roles at Opster and Logz.io and serves on multiple advisory boards.
As for the foundation, it has grown since its launch, adding members from companies such as Slack, IBM, and Aryn, with a technical steering committee and advisory groups for observability and build also being established.
OpenSearch itself has seen contributions from organizations including ByteDance, SAP, and Uber, with the project improving performance and adding new features to further bolster AI and analytics adoption.
The foundation aims to further strengthen collaboration between stakeholders and contributors, providing resources and guidance to scale the project. With new leadership in place, OpenSearch is positioned to expand its ecosystem while maintaining a vendor-neutral approach to open source development.
During the announcement, Bianca stated that:
There is an incredible energy in the OpenSearch community right now, and my goal is to harness that momentum to scale the Foundation and its technical impact. I believe in the power of open source and vendor-neutral collaboration to foster innovation and accessibility.
As search and analytics become essential to unlock AI innovation, I’m excited to support our contributors and adopters in building a strong and resilient ecosystem.
