PeerTube Needs Your Help to Upgrade its Mobile App

PeerTube is raising funds to accelerate the development of its mobile app.

Tracking-driven video platforms like YouTube and Twitch heavily rely on monitoring user behavior to fuel their algorithms and maximize ad revenue, with user privacy nowhere on their agenda.

PeerTube edges over such services with its decentralized, open source nature, where videos are hosted across a federated network of independent servers, out of the control of Big Tech.

They recently crossed a major milestone with the first stable release of their mobile app, introducing new features like posting comments, managing channel subscriptions, organizing playlists, and logging into PeerTube accounts.

Continuing on this path, they have launched a crowdfunding campaign to accelerate development and add more features to the PeerTube mobile app.

PeerTube Needs Your Help!

To continue improving what they’ve already built, PeerTube is asking people to donate and help them reach certain funding goals. These goals focus not only on adding new features to the mobile app but also on supporting the overall project and the non-profit organization, Framasoft, that runs it.

If all goes well, the community will have played a crucial role in significantly improving the mobile app while helping PeerTube grow and stay true to its mission of offering a decentralized, privacy-friendly video platform.

the four donation goals for the peertube mobile app, the peertube project, and framasoft

The four donation goals are the following:

  • Goal #1 (€15,000): Introduce background playback, TV casting, notifications, and video quality controls.
  • Goal #2 (€35,000): Add easy channel management, advanced video editing tools, detailed content stats, and support for uploading videos.
  • Goal #3 (€55,000): Enable livestreaming from the mobile app, with access to the device’s camera, microphone, and network capabilities.
  • Goal #4 (€75,000): Support Framasoft’s wider mission, helping sustain PeerTube and other free, open source software they develop.

You can send contributions to the project using the official donation page.

Want to Check Out the Mobile App?

While I am yet to test it, the screenshots shared by the PeerTube team look promising. The Android app for PeerTube can be found on F-Droid and the Play Store. For those who dwell in Apple's walled garden, there's an App Store listing for iOS devices.

💬 I feel like PeerTube’s mobile app could be a solid App of the Week candidate. What do you think?
