COSMIC Alpha 5: The Evolution of System76's Desktop Continues!
System76's COSMIC desktop is making good progress!
Proton Drive is gearing up with new upcoming features that would help you replace Google Docs big time.
Since its launch in 2022, Proton Drive has managed to gain a notable share in the cloud storage market, pitching itself as a privacy-focused alternative to the offerings from Big Tech.
Earlier this year, the Proton team introduced Docs in Proton Drive as a secure way of editing documents on Proton Drive, allowing people to have a solid replacement for Google Docs.
However, it lacked numerous features required to be a replacement.
Now, they have shared their plans for both of these products, with the Docs-related changes being particularly interesting, making it a worthy competitor to Google Docs in the near future.
Set to arrive over the coming months is the ability to receive email notifications for comments, replies, and suggestions on any document with collaborators, allowing Proton users to stay in sync with their documents.
New formatting tools like find and replace, line-spacing, and customizable fonts are also coming soon, with a new Proton Docs home screen in the works that would show an overview of all recently accessed documents.
One of the biggest upcoming highlights include the ability to share folders and documents publicly (with non-Proton users), with public folders supporting the upload of files by external users.
When sharing documents, there will be handy controls like the ability to set an expiration date, a link password, and to stop sharing. The latter of which would revoke access for everyone and discard the link.
Sadly, in their roadmap, there is no mention of a Proton Drive app for Linux. I truly hope they get it done in 2025. I have read many comments on our socials from readers who are eagerly waiting for it.
Maybe asking Proton nicely will make it happen? 👇
