Proton VPN Just Got Better With Redesigned Apps

Proton VPN apps for Windows, Android, and iOS have received many visual upgrades.

For privacy-conscious users, Proton VPN is one of the best options around. I switched to it late last year, and my experience with it so far has been great. I use it across multiple platforms like Linux, Windows, and Android, with the overall app design varying between them.

That is not an issue for someone like me, but a user who doesn't like to juggle between different interface designs would most likely get confused and might consider switching to a different VPN provider.

Luckily, the Proton VPN team has addressed that issue to some extent.

Following the design approach of the Android app, the Windows application for Proton VPN has been completely redesigned to be more intuitive than before and in line with their other apps.

It now features a revised interface, the ability to pin connections to the top, and a new Settings menu page that provides easy access to advanced functionality like Kill Switch, Port Forwarding, and Split Tunnelling.

Similarly, if you like using connection profiles on Android, then you will be glad to hear that the Windows app now allows you to create custom profiles, with a dedicated “Profiles” button being provided on the left-hand sidebar.

And, for the first time, the Windows app has a light mode for the interface, catering to users who like living on the edge, basking in the glorious, retina-burning whiteness (I say this as a dark mode user).

For iOS, the Home screen of the app has been updated to make it easier to navigate, with the same connection pinning feature as the Windows app also being introduced here.

The app even shows additional information so that users understand how their VPN app functions and detailed connection telemetry, which provides real-time updates on the VPN connection's speed, location, duration, etc.

On the other hand, Android users get access to a new Connect & Go feature, which allows for automatic launching of a website or app when connecting to a custom connection profile.

Unfortunately, there are no updates for Linux this time. A refresh with new features or a redesign for the Proton VPN app would have been a welcome change. Instead, the Linux app continues to feel like a relic of the past. 🥲

Announcing these updates, David Peterson, General Manager at Proton VPN, added that:

VPN tools and features can feel intimidating or complex, especially for new users, limiting their ability to fully benefit from what a VPN has to offer. The new Proton VPN apps make it easier than ever before to protect users' privacy while enhancing transparency to explore new features effortlessly.
